The Two Faces of Pride-blog

Recently, I found myself reflecting on a LinkedIn conversation about the importance of passion, purpose, and pride in our working lives. As someone who guides women through transformational journeys, I know how these qualities can ignite fulfilment and joy. But as I mulled over the word pride, I noticed how often it’s painted in a negative light ~ think of the old adages: “pride comes before a fall”, “arrogance and hubris”, or the stubbornness that keeps us from admitting our mistakes. It’s no wonder so many of us hesitate to embrace pride, fearing it might tip us into arrogance or self-importance.

Unpacking the Shadow Side: Arrogant Pride

Let’s be honest ~ there’s a kind of pride that truly does more harm than good. Arrogant pride is rooted in ego, defensiveness, and an unwillingness to learn or grow. It’s the pride that says, “I’m always right”, or “I don’t need help”. This form of pride can manifest as:

  • Refusing to admit when you’re wrong
  • Resisting feedback or constructive criticism
  • Belittling the achievements of others to boost your own sense of worth
  • Placing your own needs above those of your team or customers

When pride morphs into arrogance, it becomes a barrier ~ one that stifles personal growth, damages relationships, and ultimately undermines the very success it seeks to claim. In the world of service, arrogant pride can alienate customers, erode trust, and create a culture where learning and empathy are replaced by defensiveness and blame.

The Power of Healthy Pride: Service with Soul

But pride isn’t inherently negative. In fact, there’s a form of pride that is not only healthy but essential ~ especially when it comes to delivering exceptional service. This kind of pride is about honouring your values, your craft, and the impact you have on others. Healthy pride looks like:

  • Taking genuine satisfaction in a job well done
  • Continuously seeking to improve, learn, and grow
  • Celebrating both your achievements and those of others
  • Owning your mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth
  • Putting your heart into everything you do, because you care deeply about the people you serve.

When you take pride in your work, you set a standard ~ not just for yourself, but for your business and your customers. This pride fuels a spirit of excellence, integrity, and authenticity. It invites trust, loyalty, and meaningful connection. It’s the difference between simply providing a service and creating a soul-stirring experience that truly changes lives.

Turning Pride Into Purpose

So how do we cultivate this healthy pride without slipping into arrogance? It starts with self-awareness and humility. Recognise that pride is a double-edged sword: used wisely, it inspires us to give our best; used unwisely, it can close us off from growth. The key is to anchor your pride in service, not ego. Ask yourself:

  • Am I proud of the way I support and uplift my customers?
  • Do I celebrate my wins while staying open to feedback and learning?
  • Is my pride rooted in a desire to contribute, rather than to compete?

By reframing pride as a force for good ~ a commitment to excellence, compassion, and positive impact ~ we can reclaim it as an essential ingredient for both happiness and success. It’s not about being the best in the world, but being the best for the world you serve.

Final Thoughts

Pride, like any powerful emotion, is what we make of it. When we choose healthy pride ~ grounded in purpose, humility, and service ~ we not only enrich our own lives but also elevate the experiences of everyone we touch. So let’s be proud, not just of what we achieve, but of how we serve, support, and inspire those around us.
