Midlife has a way of stripping things back, leaving you feeling purposeless and directionless.
Not to punish you ~ but to show you what’s no longer sustainable.
And in that stripping back, a quieter question often appears: What now?
Not just what do I do? ~ but what matters to me now?
It can feel frightening, but it is an opportunity.
When life changes shape
For many women, this question appears during a midlife transition ~ divorce, empty nest, burnout, illness, redundancy, caring responsibilities, grief.
It can feel unsettling. But I’ve come to see it as something else:
A doorway ~ a portal if you like.
Not a dramatic reinvention (unless you want that) ~ but a gentle invitation to come back to yourself.
Purpose isn’t a shiny destination
In a world obsessed with goals, achievements, and checklists, its easy to mistake purpose for just another item to tick off.
But purpose is deeper than a destination.
It’’s a compass at your soul’s core ~ guiding you toward a life that feels yours authentically.
Purpose isn’t a job title. It isn’t a single, perfect answer you have to find. It’s how you choose to live in alignment with what matters most: and when you do that, life becomes clearer, easier, more contented.
A simple way to find your thread
Hereis a gentle prompt you can try today.
Choose one focus:
You
You might be longing for something like:
- More steady energy (less exhaustion ~ more steadiness)
- Stronger boundaries (less people-pleasing ~ more self-respect)
- More confidence (less second-guessing ~ more self-trust ~ Take your time and let the sense of what you need unfold.
Then ask: Why does that win matter? What does it protect or create?
For example:
- Better sleep, more patience and presence
- More space in your week, less resentment ~ more joy
- Stronger boundaries, calmer nervous system ~ clearer choices
- Feeling like yourself again, confidence ~ and a sense of direction
Give that deeper driver a name. Something that feels true in your body, not just clever in your head:
- Peace
- Stability
- Freedom
- Calm growth
- Self-trust
- Coming home to myself
That name becomes your compass.
Now, picture yourself in six months from now. What difference has that made?
Now imagine that, rather than just that small change, you had one soul-purpose to keep your life on track. How much greater would that change be?
The missing piece: support
Here’s what we often miss:
So many of us resist support ~ pride, fear of being a burden, the old story of I should cope, or past experiences of being let down.
But support isn’t rescue.
Its resourcing.
And when you allow yourself to be resourced, everything changes:
- Less overwhelm and decision fatigue
- More follow-through and confidence
- Better outcomes with less personal cost
Remember:
Purpose gives direction.
Support gives capacity.
A final note (from my own life)
Ive always been capable, reliable, energetic ~ the one who could be counted on.
But when long COVID affected my energy and my cognitive abilities, I had to adapt to new limitations, find absolute clarity on what mattered, and accept support and resources to make it possible. That work took the best part of a year, but every step was a step forward.
And that is part of what led to the creation of Awakened Realm and my purpose to support other women in overcoming similar challenges.
If you’re in a season where you’re having to re-meet yourself, re-negotiate your energy, or re-write what success looks like ~ I hope youll be gentle with yourself.
You don’t need to force a new life into being.
Sometimes purpose begins with a quieter decision:
To come home.
